Nigerian Senate slams South African crime
- M&G Online
There's a joke in here somewhere...
Something along the lines of:
"You know you have a serious crime problem when..."
"Nigeria issues a warning against travelling to your country!!"
"Ha Ha Ha!"
Sad, but true :-(
I subscribe to the News24 Breaking News email alert, and I just received the most useless email alert I have ever received in my life! The email read:
Parreira resigns
South African soccer coach Carlos Alberta Parreira has officially resigned.
Click here to read the full report on News24
I naturally clicked on the link to get the whole story which read as follows:
"Johannesburg - South African soccer coach Carlos Alberta Parreira has resigned, AP has reported."
That's it! The "story" had the same content as the email! There was absolutely no point in me clicking through to see the "full report" on the site!
Surely, News24 should've gone to a bit more effort with this poor excuse for an article before they mailed it to 1000's of newsletter subscribers?!?
I had an earth shattering, digital revelation today which led to a second earth shattering, digital revelation!
The first has the potential to improve a friend's digital business and the other has the potential to greatly improve my present and future business endeavours on the Internet.
It got me quite giddy with excitement such as I haven't been excited about something in a long time! (Which is of itself a fantastic thing!)
Unfortunately, sharing the details of this digital revelation with you, my reader, was not part of the revelation... Sorry ;-)
SA writes off R926,8m owed by Cuba
- Mail & Guardian Online
"Cuba's debt position had the potential to undermine bilateral economic relations"
Now this is a situation where you really have to ask yourself, do we want to have "bilateral economic relations" with a country that owes us almost R1 billion and is unable to pay it?? Surely this points to them not being very good with their "economic relations" in the first place? What makes Maseko think that the future for Cuba holds anything different?
If South Africa were a bank and Cuba, a customer of that bank, right now, Cuba would be having its credit rating smeared, its car towed away and its house repossessed! And the bank would be sure to never do business with that customer again!
Why should South Africa act any differently?
I've decided that there's no point in cementing your driveway all the way to the curb...
What you should rather do is have a nice driveway (cement or otherwise) up until about 4 meters from the curb and then use either bricks or those cement-grass things the rest of the way.
I say this, as right now, the City Council's appointed contractors are ripping my driveway to shreds with an industrial digger to lay new piping for something!
Aside: I hope it's a new water main as our water pressure is really atrocious here!
This is the second time this has happened in recent years, where previously, it was Telkom doing the ripping and they did a piss-poor job of repairing the driveway afterwards, which no doubt will happen again :-(
Taking this into consideration, I think bricks (or those cement-grass things) which can be lifted and relaid (not to mention being less expensive), would be a much better option and save us all time, hassle and unnecessary expense.
Cosatu calls on govt to intervene in food prices
- Mail & Guardian Online
While I agree that the rising food prices are a problem, and that Cosatu thinks it is acting in the best interests of its member, price controls are not an option!
Screwing with a free market economy is not a wise move at all!!
(Aside: I remember reading somewhere before that if one looks at Zimbabwe's economy over the last 15 years or so, a lot of their current economic problems started as a result of the government implementing price controls...)
And did the price controls implemented for Medicine a while back help at all? I don't think so. All it seemed to do was shift the costs around a bit and put some people out of business.
If the prices are truly inflated, then a competitor who can produce the items at a lower cost will use price as a leverage to further the sales of their own product. That's how capitalism works, Cosatu!
Also, such a mention as this without taking into consideration the current world financial troubles is ignorant and near-sighted.
It is "calls" such as these which, if heeded, will lead to the downfall of the SA economy...
I spend a great part of my day on the computer and need to access a number of different programs during this time. To speed things up, I have put all the icons for programs I use regularly on my desktop and have further arranged them in groups for quicker access.
This works very well, because I just need to hit "Show Desktop" and double-click on my desired icon to open the program I'm looking for. It's quick and efficient and works well...
That is... until Windows screws up and decides to rearrange all the icons on the desktop!
It happens every now and again when Windows changes resolutions. Being on a laptop and playing a game or two occasionally, the chances of this happening have become quite high and it's got me pulling my hair out having to rearrange my icons every 2nd day!
Enter, Launchy.
I experimented with a few pieces of software which saved your desktop icons position so that it could be restored when Windows bombed out, but found Launchy while doing this and was intrigued, so decided to test it out.
Launchy is a keystroke launcher and is absolutely fantastic!
Pressing Alt+Space brings up Launchy and then you just start typing part of the name of the application you want to launch and as soon as it comes up (it searches as you type), press Enter and voila, it launches.
It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you are, it is much faster than any other method of launching programs! No menu foldout delays, no searching for the right icon, just pure efficiency.
It can be used for cataloguing and launching of a variety of different media as well, not just shortcuts! Checkout http://www.launchy.net for more.
PS I hardly use the Start Menu anymore and have removed all the icons off my desktop (so Windows can have its way with my Desktop to its digital heart's delight).
Do black people have a right to exclusivity?
- By Bennie Bunsee
You can spin it anyway you like, Bennie, and delve into intellectual arguments about "colonialism" and past "oppression by a minority", but 14 years into the democratic South Africa, such a blatantly racist policy as the FBJ's exclusion of white journalists is a direct assault on human rights and the constitution.
Such a policy has no place in modern society where the world at large is trying (often not succeeding though) to co-exist peacefully with those of all creeds, colours & political affiliations etc.
You liken "woman's only" clubs who exclude men (which have apparently become a norm) to the FBJ's exclusion of whites. I think that this is a poor comparison as presumably such groups would be open to ALL woman be they black, white or khaki. The exclusion of men would be a natural bi-product of a group of woman meeting together to discuss things affecting them, but I doubt that they would have some burly woman at the door ensuring that no men where allowed in...
I would like us as a society to stop driving these wedges between ourselves!
I would like us to stop seeing people as "a black woman", "a white teenager" or "an indian man".
It's time to realise that we are all on this earth together, and that despite our differences, we are all humans!
